چکیده
The adherence of four Candida species to human buccal epithelial cells (BECs) following treatment with the most commonly consumed dietary carbohydrates was investigated in vitro. Adhesion of C. albicans , C . tropicalis , C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis was significantly promoted by incubation in minimal medium containing a high concentration (500 mM) of fructose, galactose, glucose, maltose, sorbitol or sucrose (pB/ 0.001). C. albicans grown in galactose elicited maximal increase in adhesion followed by glucose and sucrose. Maltose and fructose also promoted adherence of Candida spp. but to a lesser extent than galactose and glucose, while no statistical difference in adherence was observed when Candida spp. were grown in the presence of lactose and trehalose. Xylitol significantly reduced adherence of Candida spp. to BECs. No statistically significant difference in the adherence capabilities of different growth phases of C. albicans was noted, and the effect of galactose and glucose persisted irrespective of the phase of growth used. The dietary carbohydrates, therefore, might represent a risk factor for oral candidosis. The limitation of their consumption by substituting xylitol could be of value in the control of oral Candida colonization and infection.

T he Society for Microbial Ecology’s (SOMED) 36th International Conference is now history. As stated by President Andy Onderdonk in the last SOMED newsletter, the meeting was a success. The Organizing Committee, headed by Professor Alojz Bomba, had done a marvellous job. The programme was well balanced with a many good lectures highly relevant for our society. We would, however, have liked to s...

Different factors increase risk of disease transmission in beauty salons and respect to its health conditions of barber, place and devices, as the major preventive factors, play an important role in the control of disease transmission. Hence the main purpose of this study was to evaluate effective factors on health and microbial conditions in Gonabad beauty salons in Iran. In a cross-sectional ...

The complex and ancient relationships between animal hosts and the microbial communities that inhabit their digestive tracts have become the focus of intense research in recent years. As a result, our understanding of gut microbial ecology and of the evolutionary and physiologic impacts of gut microbial communities in animal hosts has grown markedly. Indeed, members of the gut microbiota have n...

T he shift of Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease to an Open Access publication model and a dedicated publishing house has now started to bear fruit. The so-called Impact Factor is one of several ranking indicators that are important for the development of a scientific journal, and I am therefore pleased to inform our authors and readers that, in July 2012, Microbial Ecology in Health and D...
